WAHPETON (KFGO-AM) -- Fire destroyed 10 stalls of a large apartment garage complex in Wahpeton late Wednesday afternoon. Three other stalls in the 48 unit garage were heavily damaged.
The fire in the 1300 block of 12th St. N. broke out just after 5 p.m.
One car was destroyed and a pickup parked nearby was damaged by the heat. The fire also melted vinyl siding on one apartment building and two other buildings were damaged when embers landed their roofs.
Firefighters believe the fire was started by a lawn mower in one of the garages."It's under investigation but we're leaning toward a lawnmower. Just not cleaning them, hot engines...electrical not the same as a car but they also have electrical ignition and stuff," Wahpeton Fire Chief Derek Miller said.
Crews from Wahpeton, Breckenridge and Dwight helped put out the fire.
