MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO-AM) - The Clay County Commission is a step closer to purchasing several homes in order to make room for a new county jail.

Commissioners met in a closed-door session Tuesday to discuss the possible purchase of between 9 and 11 homes, just north of the courthouse and law enforcement center.

“We haven’t decided what exactly our needs are going to be, or which properties we would be interested in,” Commission Chairman Grant Weyland said. “We did agree that that’s where we should be looking if we are going to expand our campus…we are leaning in that direction.”

The cost of a new jail could reach more than $30 million. Weyland says the price of buying the homes would be included in the project's total cost. The county has applied for a state grant to cover some of the costs.
