BRECKENRIDGE (KFGO-AM) -- Breckenridge City Hall is being torn down to make way for a new one.
Mayor Cliff Barth says the foundation on the old building, which was built in the early 1900's, had been sinking for years. "We talked to three different structural engineers to look at trying to reinforce it, or get it jacked back up, and the cost was over $800,000. Besides that, it needed all new windows and roofing, so by the time we would have gotten done, we would have had dang near the price of a new city hall stuck into the old one with no guarantee on how long the structure would be sound" said Barth.
City offices are currently housed in the old law enforcement center.
The new City Hall is expected to be ready by late Oct. The cost of that building, plus a southside fire hall, is about $2.2 million.
