BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Time is running out for North Dakota farmers, food companies and researchers to apply for grants aimed at boosting the development of specialty crops.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday, the last day of the month.

North Dakota is getting $2.3 million from the federal government this year to dole out as grants to boost the production and processing of crops such as dry peas, lentils, honey and confection sunflowers. The state already is among the nation's leaders in the production of those crops.

Last year, North Dakota received $3.1 million, thanks to a funding boost that resulted from an emphasis on specialty crops in the new federal farm bill.
