FARGO, N.D. (KFGO-AM) -- Hundreds of dogs across the Midwest have been hit with the canine influenza virus.

Even though no dogs have been diagnosed with the flu in North Dakota, Deputy State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Carlson says "This is a pretty contagious virus and it's generally thought that when dogs are exposed the majority of them will become infected. And of those who become infected the majority of those will show illness".

Symptoms include coughing, nasal discharge, fever and lack of energy and appetite. Carlson says while no dog is immune to the virus, younger, older and dogs with compromised immune systems are more susceptible.

"In advance, what pet owners should do is make sure their dogs are up-to-date on their vaccinations," Carlson says. "There are vaccines that may minimize the likelihood of infections. And certainly a well vaccinated dog is going to have an immune system that is better able to respond to infections."

Carlson also suggests keeping contact with other dogs to a minimum. If owners think their dog may have the flu, they should contact their veterinarian immediately.
