FARGO (KFGO-AM) -The Fargo City Commission voted 3-1 to approve a special assessment to guarantee repayment of $725 million in bonds if the FM Flood Diversion Authority fails to collect enough sales tax dollars to pay for the local share of the nearly $2 billion diversion project.
The City Commission's vote, together with the Cass County Commission's "yes" vote last month, now means there are now enough votes for the assessment to pass.
City Commissioner Dave Piepkorn cast the only "no"vote, saying the assessment vote is confusing and is stacked in favor of Fargo and Cass County because they have the biggest share of votes.
The final outcome on the special assessment district won't be known until after April 30 when votes from some 21 government entities and 50-thousand private property owner are tallied.
