FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- It's similar to a task force that disbanded after getting a street gang problem under control about 20 years ago. Fargo and West Fargo Police and the Cass and Clay County Sheriff's Depts. are putting together a metro street crimes unit to focus on renewed gang activity, which began to get organized about a year ago.
At least 40 gang members with various affiliations have been identified with "Fast Money Boys," "Squad 400" and "Lic Squad" dealing drugs, committing robberies and taking part in human trafficking.
North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation Director Dallas Carlson says its a statewide concern. Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney says while they're not connected with the street gangs, he's concerned that a motorcycle gang has claimed new territory.
Fargo Police Chief Dave Todd says the street crimes unit will have a half-dozen members who will be able to work across state lines. He says the metro area is on the "tipping point" for getting a handle on the gang problem.
