FARGO, N.D. (AP) The University of North Dakota has shifted into high gear in its campaign for a new nickname, nearly three years after the Fighting Sioux moniker was retired.
A school nickname committee earlier this week began accepting suggestions from the public for a new moniker. The committee, with advice from a branding expert, is expected to narrow down the choices for a public vote in May.
UND senior Jazmyn Friesz says it's still difficult for students to imagine being anything other than Fighting Sioux, but she believes they will get on board as long as the new nickname is identified only with UND.
Branding expert Kelly O'Keefe, from Richmond, Virginia, says the school will find the ideal nickname that will work well for a logo and look good on a jersey.
