MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO-AM) - The wife of a Clay County, Minn. sheriff's deputy wants the county to cover the cost of medical bills resulting from a former police dog attacking the couple’s four-year-old son.
Deputy Ryan Carey's wife, Sarah Carey, says the county should have retained legal responsibility for the dog "Cuda" after Carey was fired three years ago. Carey was given ownership of the dog after he was fired by Sheriff Bill Bergquist.
A sheriff's report says the boy was attacked while he was trying to hug the dog. The boy suffered serious injuries to his nose, face and scalp. Carey later appealed his firing and was eventually re-instated.
Sarah Carey has filed a lawsuit that seeks more than $50,000 in damages.
Bergquist says he has no comment on the lawsuit.
