BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's Agriculture Department is getting more than $2 million from the federal government to be given out as grants to help promote specialty crops.
State Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the U.S. Department of Agriculture has given North Dakota $2.3 million this year, down from the $3.1 million in 2014.
Goehring says projects that promote the production, processing and use of specialty crops in North Dakota are eligible for grant money. The federal government defines specialty crops as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops.
Specialty crops grown commercially in North Dakota include dry beans and peas, lentils, potatoes, confection sunflowers, grapes, honey and various vegetables.
Groups and individuals interested in obtaining a grant must apply by April 30.
