Flood Diversion Authority says assessment is back-up plan

FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- The F-M Diversion Authority held it's first of four public meetings Tuesday to talk about a proposed special assessment district. It's a funding source for the $1.8 billion project.

Many people had questions at the  meeting in Fargo regarding a special assessment fee that residents are voting on. Diversion authority committee members Wednesday clarified that the special assessment monetary amount that is specific to each residence is only a back-up plan. They believe the area sales tax will cover all costs.

"It's a little bit difficult to understand when you see what your assessment is and to realize that it's just the backup plan. There's really no change in attitude that the sales tax will be what's funding the diversion," said Cass County Commissioner Ken Pawluk.

Those who need to vote have the ballots and have until the end of April to vote either yes or no on the special assessment.

The public meetings will continue every Tuesday night for the next three weeks.
