No surprise: Latest spring flood outlook says Red River Valley flood risk remains low

GRAND FORKS (KFGO-AM) -- The latest spring flood outlook from the National Weather Service says the risk of flooding in the Red River Valley remains low.

The basin's soil moisture and snowpack level are far below normal. The flood outlook indicates a 95% chance the Red River will reach 15.4 feet in Fargo, that's nearly 3 feet below flood stage, the level where the river spills out of its banks.

Snow depths range from 2 to 15 inches across the region with lesser amounts in the southern basin. Snowpack moisture is less than an inch in most area's and soil moisture is 2 to 3 inches lower than average. Frost depths have increased to 3 to 4 feet across the basin.

The U.S. Drought Monitor shows the Red River and Devils Lake Basin's are abnormally dry with short-term moderate drought from the Red's headwaters near Lake Traverse northward to the Grand Forks area.
