FARGO (KFGO-AM) - Vehicle crossings have doubled since the 75 cent toll came off the northside bridge that connects Fargo and Moorhead.
An electronic count by Fargo's Traffic Engineering Department showed 1600 vehicles used the bridge the day before the toll was dropped. The following day, the number jumped to 3,000. The next day, 3700 vehicles used the bridge. Numbers have since leveled off to around 3,000 daily.
Fargo City Commissioner Dave Piepkorn says eliminating the toll was a priority for him. He says the next step is replacing the flood prone bridge. Piepkorn, who just assumed a leadership roll on Metro Cog, says that's one of his top goals on the transportation policy making board, made up of representatives from local goverment and transportation experts.
Moorhead Mayor Del Rae Williams says increased traffic usage since the toll was dropped means business opportunities along Moorhead's 15th Avenue North cooridor.
Fargo and Moorhead took possession of the bridge from private owners earlier this month following a lengthy court battle.
