NEW TOWN, N.D. (KFGO-AM) Truckers who don't use a new $25 million highway bypass around New Town face the prospect of a $1,500 fine.
The city has begun enforcing the new ordinance, to crack down on truck traffic. City Auditor Eileen Zaun says a city official recently observed 45 trucks go through the city in less than half an hour.
Signs have been placed at both ends of town designating the bypass and warning truck drivers about the penalty for not using it.
The ordinance applies to trucks whose weight exceeds 35,000 pounds, with or without a load. Trucks delivering products into the city are exempt.
Construction of the 3.2-mile bypass that diverts truck traffic around New Town's Main Street began last spring and wrapped up last fall.
