BISMARCK, N.D. (AP)  People who want to comment on proposed new rules dealing with the disposal of radioactive oilfield waste now have more time.

North Dakota's Health Department has extended the comment period to March 2.

Health officials are proposing to allow elevated levels of oilfield radioactive waste to be dumped at some North Dakota landfills. Environmental Health Chief Dave Glatt (glaht) has said the proposed standard is still safe for humans and the environment.

North Dakota generates up to 75 tons of radioactive waste daily, largely from so-called oil filter socks that strain liquids during the oil production process.
