FARGO (KFGO-AM) - 2014 was a record breaking year for construction in the Fargo Moorhead area.
The Home Builders Association says total construction value in Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and Dilworth was nearly $1.4 billion, more than double the previous year. Over 4400 building permits were issued, up 8% from 2013. Housing starts accounted for 27% of the permits issued, the highest level since 2005.
Home Builders Association President Clay Dietrich says the only downside was a 28% drop in single family housing starts in Fargo. He attributes that to uncertainty about flood protection and rising flood insurance premiums for those in the newly expanded flood plain in south Fargo. As a result, new home buyers may have opted for one of the other three metro communities. He says that's an indication why the F-M Flood Diverision Project is needed.
