FARGO (KFGO-AM) - A Bloomington, Minn. man who operated a multi-million dollar sports betting scheme in North Dakota has changed his plea to guilty. Sixty-nine-year-old Gerald Greenfield pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Fargo to interstate transmittal of wagering information and conspiracy to commit money laundering. A separate charge of conducting an illegal sports betting business was dropped.

Federal Prosecutors say Greenfield received "several million dollars in action" from gamblers in the Fargo-Moorhead area. “There’s millions and millions (of dollars) in sports betting and well over a million locally in losses” according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Nick Chase. “There were a total of 11 transfers that were over $10,000, totaling about $550,000 that was wired from the Fargo-Moorhead area to an account in Australia.”

“Mr. Greenfield has never contended that he wasn’t involved in bookmaking,” according to Greenfield’s attorney, James Henderson of Santa Monica, Calif. “All the plea agreement does is formally admit that on the record.”

Federal prosecutors interviewed about 10-15 people from the Fargo-Moorhead area who placed bets with Greenfield. Those bettors will not be charged.Greenfield previously pleaded guilty to participating in mortgage fraud scheme in the twin cities.
