Winning national championships has its privileges.

First-year North Dakota State football coach Chris Klieman has accepted a two-year contract extension that will keep him under contract until January 2021, the university said in a press release Monday.

Klieman and the Bison recently completed a 15-1 season that included an unprecedented fourth straight Football Championship Subdivision national championship.

"Chris understands the culture of Bison football and what it takes to continue the program's high level of success," NDSU athletic director Matt Larsen said in a press release. "The excitement around Bison football has never been greater and I look forward to having Chris and his family in Fargo for the long term."

Klieman, 47, took over as Bison head coach in January 2014 after Craig Bohl departed for Wyoming. Klieman had been an assistant at NDSU since 2011.
