Up for discussion at Monday's Fargo's City Commission meeting: A possible solution to help avoid what will become a major traffic bottleneck downtown in a couple of months when a section of 2nd Street North is closed for construction of the new floodwall. Thousands of vehicles use the street daily.
Commissioner Dave Piepkorn's idea is to drop the 75-cent toll on the 12th Avenue bridge that connects Fargo and Moorhead. He says drivers will be more likely to use the route if they don't have to pay and it will take traffic presssure off other downtown routes.
Piepkorn says his proposal is very preliminary and he knows there are still unresolved legal issues but he says it's critical discussion begins now.
The owners of the privately owned toll bridge are involved in a drawn-out legal battle with the City of Moorhead over transfer of the bridge to public ownership. It's uncertain when the suit will be settled.
