Fargo (KFGO-AM) -- A chemical leak in downtown Fargo forced the evacuation of two business buildings Saturday night and displaced a family of 3 that lived in an upstairs apartment.
Firefighters responded to the call at 211 NP Ave. around 7:30 p.m. They evacuated 8 people. One person who complained of eye irritation was treated at the scene.
The fire department's Hazardous Materials Team worked to identify the source of the problem. They traced it to an old chemical found in a vial in a safe. They say it was apparently put in there as a deterrent in case someone broke into the safe.
The building will remain evacuated until a cleanup company removes the spilled chemical.
The Red Cross is assisting the family that was displaced.
