MINOT, N.D. (AP) - Attracting talent is proving to be the biggest challenge for Minot State University more than two years after becoming a full-fledged Division II member.
The school's coaches say the stigma associated with north central North Dakota is hurting their chances at recruitment. Even with improved facilities and adequate scholarships, many prospective athletes are still deterred from attending MSU because of its location.
MSU wrestling coach Robin Ersland says that its proximity to Canada creates the perception that Minot is a barren, desolate land. And others agree that it's often a difficult task to break that mindset.
MSU baseball coach Brock Weppler believes the school would be more successful with recruitment if college-bound athletes visited the campus.
