FARGO (KFGO-AM) - Thousands of cubic yards of contaminated soil are stuck at the site of December's oil train derailment in Casselton. BNSF Railway had been paying for the dirt to be hauled to an industrial landfill near Sawyer, ND. But cost issues and weight restrictions have led to the search for an alternative landfill.

Dave Glatt is Environmental Health Chief with the ND Dept. of Health. Glatt says “We’re okay for (the soil) to be stored there for a period of time, but we don’t want it to get into the springtime when we get runoff and water issues that could make the problem bigger.”

About 1,300 cubic yards of dirt have been hauled away, but approximately 6,000 yards still need to be disposed of.

BNSF spokesperson Amy McBeth says the railroad is still finalizing an alternate location.
