Bismarck, N.D. (AP) North Dakota is receiving $1.2 million in federal funds for flood mitigation efforts and home buyouts in Cass County.

Members of the state's congressional delegation on Tuesday announced the funding from the federal emergency management agency. The funds are to be used for the acquisition and demolition of nine flood-prone residences in the county.

U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says the funds represent "another step toward providing permanent flood protection for the Red River Valley.''

The funds will cover 75 percent of the cost of removing the nine properties. The demolition will ultimately reduce public and private costs in flood response.

U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp says the funds will help Cass County continue its diligent efforts "to better prepare and plan for the unforeseeable reach of the Sheyenne River.''
