FARGO (AP) - The head of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board says the agency is working on improving reporting rules that should give grain producers and others better information on rail shipments.
The board in October issued an order requiring railways to give more details on shipping, such as average speeds, the weekly number of grain cards ordered and overdue, and the number of cars cancelled by state.
Board Chairman Daniel Elliott said during a panel discussion in Fargo Monday that the order has been interpreted differently and the rules need to be clearer and more specific.
The discussion was part of a conference on shipping agricultural products. The two-day event is sponsored by North Dakota State University and North Dakota Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp.
