Bismarck, N.D. (AP) North Dakota's Game and Fish Department is cautioning winter anglers and late-season hunters about ice conditions on lakes.
Officials say most small and mid-size waters give the appearance of being safe for foot travel. But Boat and Water Safety Coordinator Nancy Boldt says ice thickness is never consistent especially this time of year.
Boldt says a hunter last weekend went through ice and was covered in freezing water up to his neck while trying to retrieve a duck. She says the hunter was fortunate to be able to pull himself out.
