MOORHEAD (KFGO-AM) -- Details are still being worked out as Moorhead prepares to annex Oakport Township into the city Jan. 1.
Monday night, in a non-voting session, the city council agreed to allow hunting to continue in designated area's.
Council member Mike Huelett says people have been hunting in the township for many years and he believes the proposed ordinance covers everything it should to ensure the safety of residents and hunters.
Deputy Police Chief Shannon Monroe outlined his recommendations to the council. They include a ban on bow hunting within 200 feet of any home, road, trail or park. Firearm hunters would have a buffer zone of 500 feet. Another would require hunters to shoot from at least five feet off the ground.
The city council is expected to have first reading of the hunting ordinance next week.
