MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota's most senior member of Congress, Collin Peterson, has won his 13th term.
Voters in western Minnesota's 7th District are sending Democrat Collin Peterson back to Washington after he withstood a vigorous challenge from GOP state Sen. Torrey Westrom.
Peterson is an influential voice on agricultural issues and helped craft the 2014 farm bill. He touted during his campaign the benefits of his 24 years in office and his position as the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee.
Westrom had argued Peterson's support for the policies of President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi hurt western Minnesota.
Millions of outside dollars flowed into the race because it was one of nine congressional districts held by Democrats that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney carried.
