Bismarck, N.D. (ND) North Dakota voters have rejected a proposed measure that would have funneled more oil taxes into water, wildlife and parks projects.
The measure would direct 5 percent of the state's oil extraction taxes into the state's conservation fund, which is currently capped at $30 million during the state's two-year budget cycle.
Opponents have said the measure would set aside almost $5 billion during that time for conservation projects at the expense of other state needs. Supporters say the measure would help protect the state's natural resources and aid in future conservation efforts.
The ballot measure was one of the most controversial issues facing North Dakota voters on election day and spawned well-funded media campaigns from supporters and foes.
