FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- Morale, the handling of discipline, and a lack of communication within the Fargo Police Department are among the most often cited problems by more than 60 officers who were interviewed by a five-member committee that's investigating police operations.
Committee member Jim Prochniak says a staff shortage is also playing into some of the problems. He says they're feeling overworked, by internal programs or calls for service that are running some officers ragged. He says the term "blue flu" has been mentioned. The level of stress is causing some to call in sick.
The committee is impressed by those who agreed to talk. Chairman Brian Berg says they "bleed blue" and are dedicated to resolving the problems. The committee will present recommendations on resolving the issues to city commissioners Nov. 24.
