FARGO (KFGO-AM) The extreme shortage of ice for hockey programs in Fargo is about to get better.

The park board has unanimously approved a plan that allows the Metro Sports Foundation to move forward with construction of an additional sheet of ice at Scheels Arena. The non-profit runs the arena and will cover the $3 to $5 million cost of the 500 seat rink addition. No taxpayer dollars will be spet.

The arena's General Manager John Kram says planning and ordering materials will be done over the winter with a spring construction start. He says the new rink should be ready for next year's hockey season.

The Youth Hockey Association says participation in its programs is expected to grow to more than 1100 players this year, up 34% from just five years ago.
