Tioga, N.D. (AP) More than $700,000 in federal funding has been authorized to support the salary and benefits of six law enforcement officers in North Dakota.
U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp says the money will help cities hire new law enforcement officers and preserve the roles of others.
Heitkamp says that although North Dakota's economy "continues to be the envy of the nation,'' the vast population growth it has spurred has come with challenges. She says North Dakota law enforcement has continued to do its job at the highest level while clearly lacking the needed personnel and resources.
The U.S. Department of Justice authorized the grants that will benefit the sheriff's department in Stutsman and Griggs counties, as well as the city of West Fargo and the Tioga police department.
