OTTAWA (KFGO) - Transport Canada says 18 factors led to last year's train derailment in Quebec that caused a deadly fire and explosion involving North Dakota crude.

Forty-seven people were killed when 72 tanker cars derailed in a densely-populated area in the town of Lac Megantic.

Canadian investigators say the derailment was caused by a combination of poor quality rail cars, poor training and a "weak safety culture."

The report also concluded that large quantities of spilled oil, the rapid rate of release, and the oil’s high volatility were major contributors to the large post-derailment fireballs and pool fire.

The train was carrying about two-million gallons of oil from New Town, ND to a refinery in New Brunswick.
