FARGO (KFGO-AM) - Former Vice-President Walter Mondale says after four decades, memories of the fall of President Nixon are still stunning.
Mondale was a Minnesota Senator while Nixon occupied the White House. Mondale says Nixon, who resigned 40 years ago Friday, was well aware that he was facing almost certain impeachment.
“They had the votes, and he was told that” according to Mondale. “You still gotta be stunned that a successful elected president would allow himself to be humiliated in this way,”
Mondale says about two days before Nixon’s departure, some members of the senate went to the White House and told the president “A lot of us are going to vote to convict you. Don’t look for us to save you on this thing. You need to get out of this, fast.”
Mondale says Nixon's departure is one of the most astonishing things he's ever seen. He says nothing like that has ever happened in American history.
