FARGO (KFGO-AM) - Former Vice-President Walter Mondale is at odds with his former boss regarding how to recognize Hamas in the war between Israel and the Palestinians.

Former President Jimmy Carter recently said Hamas should be recognized as a "legitimate political actor" because it represents a large portion of the Palestinian people. But Mondale says he considers Hamas a "radical group" that won't abide by any rules but their own.

“Israel has to defend herself,” Mondale said. “No country would accept being blasted every day by thousands of rockets.” Mondale told KFGO News “Hamas is a very radical group; they don’t intend to abide by any rules except their own.

Referring to Carter, Mondale said “He’s my old pal,” but, I think I probably disagree.”

Mondale called the situation in the Middle East "tragic", but says he remains hopeful for a long-lasting resolution.
