FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- An elderly Fargo woman was scammed out of $15,000. Police Lt. Joel Vettel says relatives called police after noticing discrepancies in the woman's bank accounts.
The woman was told she won several million dollars but needed to pay taxes on the winnings. The woman was told to buy MoneyPak cards and give the caller the access codes. She was also told to mail the money to a Florida address.
Vettel says these scams usually originate outside the U.S., and it's unlikely the woman will get her money back.
If you oversee banking accounts of an elderly relative, Vettel urges you to keep close watch for discrepancies because often-times scammers move very quick.
