FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The mayor of Fargo will be in Washington while voters decide whether he should get a third term.

Dennis Walaker says he has accepted an invitation to attend a ceremony at the White House Tuesday when President Barack Obama will sign a water projects bill that includes the Red River diversion project.

The proposed $2 billion diversion would move floodwaters through a 26-mile channel around Fargo, which has faced major flooding in the last several years. The Water Resources Reform and Development Act authorizes construction of the project, but Congress must separately pass legislation that pays for it.

Walaker says it's an honor to attend the ceremony and calls it a "great step'' for the community.

Walaker is facing Fargo jewelry store owner Brad Wimmer in the mayor's race.
