FARGO (KFGO-AM) - A former commander of the Blue Angels says he's surprised that the Navy had to discipline a leader of the team for allowing inappropriate behavior and pornographic images in the workplace.

The Navy says the problems occurred while Capt. Gregory McWherter led the elite flying team for four years until 2012.

Portland, ND native Gil Rud was commander of the Blue Angels in the 1980's. Rud tells KFGO News the findings do not represent how the Blue Angels are encouraged to behave.

“That’s a real surprise. I don’t think that’s a culture at all” Rud said. “I think that’s just some bad behavior by a few individuals here in one instance.

Rud says the Navy's findings--and how the results were handled--will ultimately make the Blue Angels better. Rud commanded the Blue Angels between 1986 and 1988.
